The scholarships are given from the very first year! As of now, the iMTech batch has only institute sponsored scholarships. As we progress, we might have lots more sponsored by the industry (HP, Cisco, SocGen, ABB, Infosys, etc. offer scholarships to the MTechs).
There are two types: Merit Based and Needs Based. The Needs Based Scholarship, as the name implies, is meant for those who require the fees to be subsidized (parental income under 10Lpa). If granted, your tuition fee for the year will be waived, and you'll receive a stipend of Rs. 2,500 per month. The Merit Based scholarship has no cap on parental income, and is open to all. If granted, you'll receive a stipend of Rs. 5,000 per month.
Selection is based on your JEE Mains rank (in the first year), essay, and an interview the scholarship committee conducts if you're shortlisted. Just a couple of things: the scholarship is valid for one year, you'll have to reapply the next year, and accepting it means that you'll have to have to record atleast 90% attendance.
I'm not too sure about the number, but as of now, there are about 4-5 of each of the scholarship types.
